MIVOLT Supports Project ZEN (Zero Emission Norton) with Dielectric Liquids for Immersion Cooled Drivetrain

(Manchester, June 2022) Immersion cooling liquids brand MIVOLT has been selected to support Norton Motorcycles with Project ZEN, which will build Norton’s capability in designing electric motorcycles. The project has been funded by Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) 19, an initiative that aims to assist businesses in the automotive sector in advancing their low-carbon offering while helping to accelerate the UK towards a net-zero automotive future.

Manufactured by M&I Materials, based at Trafford Park, Manchester, MIVOLT will supply fluids and dielectric expertise to the 30-month project. A single fluid will be optimised for use across the whole power train, lightweighting the motorcycle through immersion cooling of critical components.

Project ZEN comprises a consortium of specialist project partners who have the same vision for innovation in the production of world-class electric motorcycles. The team encompasses Delta Cosworth, HiSpeed Limited, Formaplex Technologies, INDRA and academic partner WMG (The University of Warwick).

Building on the findings from I-CoBat, a previous project led by MIVOLT and funded by Innovate UK, the MIVOLT team will support the immersion cooled power train concept by leading on fluid optimisation, fluid containment, fire prevention and materials compatibility.

“We are pleased to be supporting another UK-led research project that is exploring the concept of liquid immersion cooling. This project is particularly exciting as it involves the whole power train being fully immersed, this lightweighting will improve both performance and range. We look forward to working with the other project partners and sharing our expertise to date.”
