Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) contain rechargeable batteries that can store energy from different sources, typically intermittent generation such as solar and wind, releasing it when it is needed. BESS is beneficial for utilities, businesses and homes as it can ensure a continual flow of power – safeguarding against adverse weather conditions and blackouts. It also reduces reliance on fossil fuels, minimising pollution and the effects of global warming. With BESS, users become less dependent on the grid and are able to manage their consumption effectively – using stored energy during peak times when electricity rates are higher.

To maintain BESS effectively and safely, thermal management needs to be addressed. Batteries need to be kept at certain temperatures to ensure capacity is preserved, length of charge is optimised and longevity is enhanced.
